INTERVIEW WITH
DR. TIAGO
OLIVEIRA
ESU UROLOGY BOOTCAMP
   20
Dr. Athanasios Dellis (AD): Dear Dr Oliveira, dear Tiago, first of all I would like to thank you for inviting HUA to observe the “ESU Urology Bootcamp for first year residents”, that you organized in Lisbon for 3rd time, under the auspices of the European School of Urology (ESU). Please give us first a little information, concerning the initial idea and the “background” of the Course.
Dr. Tiago Oliveira (TO): Over the past decades, traditional surgical education has been facing considerable challenges, with several reports showing that Urology residency programs have limitations that can compromise the quality of urological training over the next years.
The idea to develop the ESU Urology Bootcamp rose from the feedback and results of the Urology Simulation Bootcamp, developed in Leeds by Mr. Chandra Shekhar Biyani, a five-day course covering several technical and non-technical skills training for 3rd and 4th year residents from the UK. Taking in consideration the lessons learned from the Urology Simulation Bootcamp in Leeds, and using the considerable experience with
the ESU validated training courses, the ESU Urology Bootcamp was designed to provide first year Urology residents in Europe the necessary technical skills to perform basic urological procedures from the beginning of their residency.
AD: What is the ESU Bootcamp Program and how is it included in the wider training programme of EAU, “Standardisation In Surgical Education” (SISE)?
TO: The SISE programme is a comprehensive approach to urological training developed by the EAU, in order to improve urological training throughout Europe. With this programme, several structured training curricula (laparoscopy, endoscopic stone treatment, robotic surgery...) are implemented in parallel to provide validated and standardized training to all Urology residents. The ESU Urology Bootcamp is the fist step of the SISE programme, and represents the first contact that most residents will have with the educational activities provided by the ESU. After completing the ESU Urology Bootcamp, residents will be able to proceed to more advanced levels of each of the parallel training
